Client Reflections: Waitetoko Road

One of the best ways to understand what it’s like to build with Kōtare Homes is to hear directly from the people who have been through the process.

The following is the experience of Dennis and Lesley Bird, homeowners of the Waitetoko Road project

Initial considerations

After purchasing a 1975 property on the edge of Lake Taupo that was in a state of disrepair, we faced a significant decision: whether to completely rebuild the home or renovate the existing structure. We spent considerable time deliberating this choice, as we wanted to create a ‘kiwi batch’ with a mid-century look that blended seamlessly with the surrounding properties. At the same time, it was important for us to incorporate all the modern conveniences expected in a contemporary home.

Choosing a builder

Having previously built several high-end houses, we initially considered engaging one of theirrecommended builders. However, after seeking advice from various consultants and receiving recommendations from others who had worked with Cameron and his team, we ultimately decided to proceed with them.

Concerns before the build

Before starting the project, we had concerns about whether our vision could be realised and if the process would be straightforward. The uncertainty of undertaking such a substantial renovation or rebuild weighed on us, particularly as we hoped to achieve a specific aesthetic and functional outcome.

What nearly stopped us

One of the major factors that nearly prevented us from moving forward was the challenge of finding a team who truly understood our goals and could adapt the plan to suit our needs, especially given our desire to be in the house for the summer holidays, even if the build was not fully complete.

Our building experience

Cameron and Cody visited the site and immediately demonstrated a positive and proactive attitude. They quickly grasped what we wanted to achieve and were flexible in adjusting the building plan to accommodate our timeline. To ensure we could enjoy the summer holidays in the house, they prioritised getting the deck and living areas ready for us, even though the new part of the build was still underway. Their dedication and hard work were evident throughout this period.

Communication and workmanship

One aspect that stood out was the team’s exceptional communication. They maintained clear, ongoing updates and provided a schedule of work that was easy to follow. The contractors and subcontractors collaborated effectively, and the workmanship throughout the project was of a very high standard.

Surprises during the process

We were pleasantly surprised by how well the team managed the many complexities involved in such a large build. While building or renovating a home inevitably presents challenges, Cameron and his team remained solution-focused. Any issues that arose were dealt with promptly, and effective plans were made to keep the project moving forward.

Neighbour and community relations

The team’s professionalism extended beyond the build itself. They were consistently tidy and polite, and our neighbours all reported positive interactions with them during the course of the project.

Final thoughts and recommendations

We are absolutely delighted with the final result. Our new home not only meets our expectations in terms of style and functionality but also stands as a testament to the skill and commitment of Cameron, Cody, and their team. We would highly recommend them to anyone undertaking a similar project.
